The University of California schools take the top 13 percent or so of
graduating high school seniors. The state university schools take the
top one-third. The UC schools award doctorates, the Cal State Schools
stop at the master's level.

Adult Schools
Although rarely in the headlines, adult schools serve thousands of
residents. Upholstery, microwave cooking, ballroom dancing, computers,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, aerobics, investing in stocks, art,
music, Quicken, how to raise children -- al these and more are offered
in adult schools. These schools and programs are run by school districts
and by cities. Many schools also run adult sports programs: basketball,
volleyball, tennis.
